Interview with Mr Lim Bun

Q: When did you start to teach in Gan Eng Seng School?

A: In 1972

Q: How was the discipline of the students that time?

A: Most of them were very street-wise, can be very naughty at times.

Q: What were the facilities in the old school?

A: There was more PE facilities but fewer classrooms.

Q: Can you make a contrast between the old and new school?

A: There was a good field, basketball court and multi purpose court and a room for table tennis. It also had a big library. The new building now is better but a little bit too congested. The courts are sub-standard.

Q: Did you like the school at that time?

A: It is a good school, good teacher. I liked my math and literature teacher.

Q: How were the students back then?

A: There were disciplinary problems so the principal changed into MOE senior inspector Robert Tan. I remembered him very clearly as he is very fierce. (Breaks into laughter.)

Q: What were your feelings towards the school?

A: The canteen stallholders are passionate to their job. Sometimes they give you free food if you really don’t have money. I think a good school must not only comprise of good teachers but also everyone including the canteen stallholders.

Reviews from the interview
According to the interviews we did, the interviewees who joined gan eng seng in the 1970s said that they had disciplinary problems among the student. Like they can be very naughty and playful. However, the interviewees in the 1990s said that the discipline was quite good. This shows the tremendous improvement in the GESSian community. Well done, GESSians!
